Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original German WWII Luftwaffe Anti-Aircraft Flak Battle Badge, or Flak-Kampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe, manufactured by C.E. Juncker of Berlin. It is an early tombak example with solid back construction, strong surviving detail, original vertical needle pin assembly, and a well preserved aged patina.

The badge features an oak leaf wreath tied at the bottom with a ribbon, surmounted by a Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swas. Within the wreath is an 88mm Flak gun angled upward toward the upper right, with the barrel extending beyond the edge of the badge.

This early example is constructed from tombak alloy and uses a solid back design. The reverse is fitted with a vertical needle style pin, barrel hinge, and round wire catch.

The badge measures approximately:

2.4" (61mm) high
1.7" (43mm) wide

The obverse remains in very good condition with only minimal wear to the raised details. The original antiquing is still visible in the recessed areas, helping preserve the depth of the oak leaves, eagle, and Flak gun. The surface overall has developed an attractive age patina.

The reverse is maker marked in the center of the Flak gun, which is a bit hard to read:

identifying manufacture by C.E. Juncker of Berlin, one of the better known German military badge producers of the period, and a known maker of early Flak badges.l

There is some roughness visible on the reverse, which appears consistent with the original manufacturing process rather than later damage. The pin, hinge, and catch remain present.

With its early tombak construction, solid back, C.E. Juncker Berlin maker marking, original pin assembly, strong recessed antiquing, and very good surviving detail, this is a particularly appealing Luftwaffe Flak Battle Badge. The light surface wear, aged patina, and minor reverse roughness are all fully disclosed. It would display especially well in a Luftwaffe Flak, early tombak badge, C.E. Juncker maker, or advanced German WWII award collection.

Anti-Aircraft Flak Battle Badge (German: Flak-Kampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe) was a World War II military decoration of NSDAP Germany. It was instituted on 10 January 1941 by Hermann Göring in his capacity as the Commander in Chief of the Luftwaffe. The badge was awarded to servicemen of the Flak artillery who distinguished themselves in action against enemy aerial or ground attacks.

Designed by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus, the badge was of single piece construction with a pin back and clasp. It was made in one grade; it had a Luftwaffe eagle at the top, and an oak leaf wreath around the outside rim. In the middle was an 88 mm flak gun with the barrel facing upwards to the right. The badge was worn on the lower part of the left breast pocket of the service tunic, underneath the 1st class Iron Cross if awarded.

It was awarded after the accumulation of 16 points or could also be awarded outside of the points system for an act of merit or bravery in the performance of air defense duties. If the candidates' battery brought down an enemy aircraft then the crew members were awarded four points. If two batteries were involved then each battery received two points. Both officers and crews were eligible for the badge. The commanding officer for an anti-aircraft unit was eligible for the badge once half of his men also qualified for the badge. The award was also available to searchlight crews and sound-locator crews. Searchlight and sound-locator crews which assisted in the action by detection of aircraft could be awarded one point each. The German Army had a similar badge, however, earning points towards it were only awarded for the downing of aircraft and not for ground targets. Prior to the introduction of the Ground Assault Badge of the Luftwaffe, this badge could be awarded to a serviceman for the participation in three separate combat operations against tanks, bunkers or ships.
