Original Items: Only One Available. This is an very nice condition early example of a German WWII Luftwaffe Officer's Sword from the well-known maker Paul Weyersberg of Solingen. Early examples such as this were fit with silver-plated nickel alloy mountings, with lovely brass "Sunwheel" style Swas (Hook Cross) emblems. Many times this would then be coated with blue oxide, however this example looks to have had most of that wear away. Later they would move to the "Air Age" aluminum material, which didn't develop the lovely patina that this sword has. It comes complete with its original scabbard, which unfortunately has suffered significant damage to the leather covering.

The blade of this example measures 30 3/8 inches, and is very impressive. It has an outstanding nickel plated surface in excellent condition, with just a bit of running wear and scuffing. The tip is fully intact with no bending, and the blade has correctly not been sharpened. There does not appear to be any oxidation or plating loss, making this really a fantastic blade.

This great example was made by Paul Weyersberg of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. The reverse ricasso is etched with PAUL WEYERSBERG & Co. / SOLINGEN in double ovals around the firms trademark "Sword-and-Wreath" logo, which was the only marking they used during the Third Reich era. This company was one of many in Solingen owned by members of the Weyersberg family. The company survived the war, but ceased production in 1955. Above the trademark logo is an early war Weimar Eagle mark with a 5 inside, a common Luftwaffe inspection mark, who continued to use the Weimar style eagle throughout the war. There are remnants of the leather blade buffer on the crossguard, but it looks to have disintegrated long ago.

This early Luftwaffe Sword has very nice plated nickel alloy mounts, with brass caps for the Swas designs. The original oxide coating is mostly worn away, however the plating still looks to be present, even between the arms of the "sunwheel" style swas. This has not developed a very pleasing patina, and we cannot see any wear through.

The pommel has very nice rims, with just some edge scratching, and very nice stamping to the oak leaves and acorns which run around the circumference. The medallion sun wheels very good as well, having great aged brass finish which really sticks out against the silver next to them. The lower cross guard sun wheels are brass inserts, so they do not have silvering between the legs anymore. The crossguards are nice and crisp and they both have good detail to the feathering of the downward pointing quillons, which look to have lost much of the silver plating, and how has a bit of oxidation on the nickel base metal.

The grip is a wood based type, with original Moroccan blue leather covering. This leather is in good condition throughout and still shows almost all of the leather grain. There are just a few small dents and areas of wear-through, with no major tears or wood exposure. The original double twisted bullion wrapped wire grip binding is intact, with the plating mostly worn away, and now showing a great aged patina.

The scabbard shell is nice and straight, with no denting we can see, and is entirely non-magnetic. The original Moroccan blue leather covering however has definitely seen better days, and has almost completely detached from the front side of the scabbard. A portion has torn away completely, and it is loose and in delicate condition now. It could most likely be repaired, but would definitely need someone specialized in this type of repair.

The scabbard mounts are a fine matching nickel alloy with silver plate. The mounts are in good condition, with fully intact plating with a great patina, showing some of the original blue oxide coating still intact.. The Moroccan leather sword hanger is present, and shows age, with wear to the leather, but is fully intact and has no repairs.

A very nice early Luftwaffe sword, with a great nickel-plated blade. Ready to display!
