Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a great double sided hand embroidered banner representing the Deutscher Siedlerbund (‘German Settler's Association), which was founded in 1933 and remains in existence today as the Verband Wohneigentum (Homeowner's Association). It was descended from post WWI organizations designed to place WWI veterans in settlements and provide advocacy for homeowners. There originally had been multiple organizations, but as with many German organizations, the NSDAP forced nationalization in 1933, placing them under their umbrella. The banner measures a nice small 8 1/4"H x 7"W, and has a 2" long black fringe on the bottom. Originally it was slightly longer and had a hanger sleeve at the top, however that was torn through, with the extra fabric folded over.
The front side of the heavily embroidered red banner features a black swas (hook cross) within a half oak leaf half laurel wreath, with golden rays emanating from the center. Two shaking hands split the rays beneath the wreath, and this whole image is held within a golden shield-shaped border. The reverse shows a stylized embroidered NSDAP Reichsadler, with an eagle perched upon a wreathed swas, with its wings raised as if just landing or taking off. There is a golden sun in the upper right, with rays radiating down to the lower left.
Overall condition is very good, with the embroidery very well retained. There is some overall staining and age toning on both sides, so it did see some use. This definitely must have taken a good amount of time to execute, and we assume it was hanging in an office of the organization. Ready to research and display!
