The DAF (Deutsche Arbeitsfront or German Labor Front) was a National Socialist trade union that supplanted independent unions once the NSDAPs had come to power in Germany. This is a lovely large 90" x 110" (7.5ft. x 9.16ft.) example of the DAF Musterbetriebsfahne (Model Company Flag), awarded to companies that achieved exemplary production during that year. This is the first time that we have had one of these rare flags, and it is in excellent unissued condition! There are just a few stains keeping it from being truly mint!

On August 29, 1936 Adolf H announced an annual national competition for factories and businesses to compete for award of the newly established DAF Musterbetriebsfahne Exemplary Factory flag. The criteria for award of the flag were: maintaining social order within the factory, raising productivity and living standards, observing the NSDAP’s policies on marriage and family life, and obtaining production goals as laid out in the four year economic plan. Award of the flag was accompanied plaque to be displayed at the factory, an award document and award of the DAF Golden Honor Pin to the factory head.

These flags were first introduced as a competition in 1937, the criteria to be awarded one of these flags was that as a factory, you followed the rules and standards for the workers set out by the NSDAP. In the first year of its creation, it is believed that only 103 flags were awarded. In 1939 on the outbreak of war the competition was abolished until re-instated in 1941 as the War Exemplary Factory competition and the flag was changed.

This example looks most likely to be a later production flag, when the original gold fabric was replaced with printed yellow. It appears to be made of cotton or a cotton and wool blend, and due to the size is made from multiple pieces of fabric, with the design printed / dyed onto the material. It displays the DAF "cog wheel" logo on a red field, with the NSDAP swas in the center. The gears of the wheel are yellow gold, and there is also a yellow gold border around the entire outside of the flag. There is a lanyard sewn inside the header, which is sewn into a loop at the top, and extends 32 inches below.

A truly excellent example of a rare flag that would be almost impossible to improve upon. Ready to display!

With the dissolution of all Free Trade Unions in Germany in May 1933 the Deutsche Arbeitsfront, (German Labor Front), was established to replace the unions and to educate the workers in industry and commerce for smooth and efficient operation of all labor in the Third Reich. In October 1934 the DAF was given official status as a sub-section of the NSDAP and in March 1936 it was recognized as an independent NSDAP affiliated association and granted control of its own monetary budget. With this money it was able to procure it's own signs and other insignia.
