This is an original German WWII Croatian national sleeve shield, a machine-embroidered insignia intended for personnel serving in Croatian-designated Waffen-SS formations. The design consists of the traditional Croatian red-and-white checkerboard, or šahovnica, worked into a pointed shield and surrounded by a black wool backing.

The distinctive scalloped upper edge identifies this as the pattern commonly classified by collectors as the second-pattern Croatian sleeve shield; the earlier form used a straight-topped shield. Personnel of the 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS “Handschar” (1st Croatian) and the short-lived 23rd Waffen Mountain Division of the SS “Kama” (2nd Croatian) are documented as having used Croatian national arm shields of this type.

The shield is in very good overall condition. The red embroidery remains bright and the off-white portions show only expected age toning and scattered dark fibers or minor surface marks. The black wool backing retains good body with some light perimeter fraying, loose threads, and handling wear. The reverse embroidery remains substantially complete. No obvious continuous line of uniform attachment stitching is visible in the photographs, and the piece appears to have seen little, if any, actual wear.

The formation most closely associated with this insignia was the 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS “Handschar” (1st Croatian). The division was authorized in 1943 and recruited primarily among Bosnian Muslims within the wartime Independent State of Croatia, together with German cadre and other personnel. Its official Croatian designation reflected the political and territorial framework under which the division was raised rather than the ethnicity of every individual member.

As part of its uniform distinctions, personnel of the division used the Croatian checkerboard national shield. This insignia was separate from the division’s own emblem and instead emphasized the formation’s Croatian designation. Regulations concerning sleeve placement varied during the period, and surviving photographs demonstrate some variation in actual wear, particularly among mountain formations where other sleeve insignia also had to be accommodated.

The same checkerboard sleeve shield is also associated with the 23rd Waffen Mountain Division of the SS “Kama” (2nd Croatian), another formation raised largely from Bosnian Muslim personnel in 1944 using a cadre drawn partly from the 13th Division. Kama never reached full divisional strength and existed only briefly before being dissolved later that year.
