Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice WWII period German flag displaying the historic coat of arms of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The flag measures approximately 28 by 46 inches and is constructed from a single piece of printed wool with a reinforced canvas header.

The Hamburg coat of arms depicts a white castle with three towers and a closed gate against a red field. The center tower is surmounted by a cross, while the two outer towers are topped by six pointed stars traditionally known as the Mariensterne, or Marian stars. These religious symbols are generally associated with Hamburg’s medieval ecclesiastical history and the former Mariendom, or Cathedral of Mary.

The castle, crenelated walls, and closed gate have traditionally been interpreted as symbols of Hamburg’s independence and determination to defend itself. The basic three tower design dates back to medieval city seals, although the precise appearance of the castle and gate changed considerably over the centuries.

The canvas header contains a halyard rope that terminates in a loop at the upper end and extends approximately 20 inches below the flag. The size and rigging suggest that it may have been intended for use aboard a small vessel or at a waterside installation, although its original location and exact use cannot be confirmed.

The flag remains in very good condition, showing light age toning and staining from use. It exhibits little evidence of prolonged wind wear, suggesting that it saw only limited outdoor use or may have been displayed indoors.
