Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Metropolitan Police Long Dress "Walking Out" Bayonet, which comes complete with its original Bremen Metropolitan Police marked black leather scabbard. A lovely piece of German WWII memorabilia!
The handle of the bayonet is lovely solid nickel plated aluminum alloy, featuring a lovely decorated "Birds Head" pommel with a functional bayonet slot and an upswept cross guard decorated with oak leaves. Both the cross guard and eagle’s head are in very good condition, with most of the original nickel plating still intact, showing just a bit of wear and oxidation. The grip scales are made of beautiful stag horn with an aluminum police insignia firmly attached on one side. These are held with solid aluminum rivets and show no wiggle at all. The grips are in great shape, showing no chips or cracking.
As with most police bayonets, there is a unit marking on the reverse top fitting of the scabbard:
S. Br. II. 269.
This indicates issue to the Metropolitan Schutzpolizei (Protection Police) of the Bremen area, District II, Officer 269. There is no unit marking on the bayonet handle, and we do not see any evidence that it was ever marked. There is however an F956 stamping on the spine of the blade, and a 414 stamped on the top of the scabbard throat, which we do not understand the meaning of.
The bayonet has a lovely approximately 33 cm (12.75 inches) long nickel plated steel blade, which was forged "cut-down" style, with the fuller running to the tip. Blade is nice and mostly bright, of excellent quality, and still has about 75% of the original nickel plating, with some light overall oxidation and wear, showing missing plating near the tip from runner wear and cleaning. There is also a bit of bubbling and oxidation near the ricasso, and the leather blade buffer is still present against the crossguard. There is no maker marking on the scabbard, which is not uncommon, as unmarked blade blanks were often purchased from cutlers by military outfitters.
The scabbard is made of fine black leather, fitted with nickel plated "German silver" alloy, and is in very good condition. The plating on the fittings is well retained with some missing on the frog button and lower ball. The leather does show age and finish loss, with some flaking to the black finish on the leather.
This is a very nice early war metropolitan police bayonet with scabbard! Ready to display!
