Original Item: Only One Available. Map cases were issued on a limited basis to specifically designated personnel such as unit commanders, pilots, and observers. The M35 map/dispatch case was based on the Weimar era, Reichsheer pattern map/dispatch case with minor variations. The M35 map/dispatch case underwent a front closure modification in mid-1936, and an additional small front pocket was added in 1938, although the early pattern cases continued to be manufactured through-out the war.
Made of a light brown, pebbled leather, this early pattern M35 map case is in good service used condition! It features a fold-over top flap with a vertical closure strap, as well as various pockets for a ruler, pencils, and various other map accessories. The hardware is all aluminum, correct for early production, and this also prevented any interference with using a compass. The rear has two vertical belt loop straps and buckles. Interior has two compartments with a central leather separator, which is still intact. The leather is in very good shape, and the stitching is mostly sound, however the lower rear left corner stitching has torn about 2 inches in either way. The leather strap to push the ruler out is broken as well. Overall the case measures 10 ½"H x 7 ½"W x 2".
Under the front flap are various colored grease pencils to be used with the map, however inside are actually ALLIED issue WWII Paper maps! This pouch looks to have been captured at some point during the war, and then put to good use! Most of these look to be British Issue, and included the following:
- TWO British Maps of Brumath in Eastern France
- One British Map of Hagenau in Eastern France
- One British Map of Drusenheim in Eastern France
- One British Map of Eastern France showing Verdun to Wissembourg
- One Road map of Germany near Munich, prepared under directly of the Chief Engineer ETOUSA, Printed in England.
One the U.S. entered the ETO, they relied mostly on British maps, which could be supplied much faster than those printed in the U.S.. As can be seen U.S. forces could direct that specific maps be made.
A very nice piece of genuine German WWII field gear, captured and used by Allied Forces, ready to research and display!
