  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very attractive original German WWII “AFRIKA” campaign cuff title, or Ärmelband Afrika, of the pattern instituted during the closing months of the North African campaign. Unlike the earlier dark green “AFRIKAKORPS” formation cuff title, this later pattern was a campaign decoration available to qualifying personnel of the German armed forces who had served in the North African theater. The design is immediately recognizable by the large embroidered AFRIKA inscription flanked by palm trees on a tan-brown band.

This example is constructed from a finely woven, slightly plush tan-brown fabric commonly described in period-collecting terminology as “camel-hair” cloth. Across the center, AFRIKA is machine embroidered in light gray to off-white thread, with a stylized palm tree positioned at either end of the inscription. Matching light-colored woven braid runs continuously along the upper and lower edges, completing the characteristic appearance of the regulation campaign band. The reverse offers an excellent view of the textile construction and embroidery, with the backing threads and age-toned fabric clearly visible.

This example measures 44.5 cm (17 ½") from end to end. The surviving length is particularly useful for displaying the cuff title in its original extended form rather than as a short section cut from a uniform sleeve. The ends remain unfinished and show some fraying and loose threads, while the edge braid remains substantially intact.

Condition is good overall, with honest wear consistent with an original wartime textile. The tan fabric shows noticeable age toning, scattered discoloration, creasing, and surface wear. The light embroidery remains complete and readily legible, with both palm trees retaining good definition. The upper and lower woven borders exhibit expected wear and areas of loosened or frayed thread, particularly toward the ends, which themselves show more pronounced fraying and handling wear. Despite this, the cuff title remains substantially complete and presents extremely well.

The Ärmelband Afrika was instituted on January 15, 1943, and should not be confused with the earlier “AFRIKAKORPS” cuff title introduced for personnel of the German Africa Corps. The earlier formation insignia consisted of the word AFRIKAKORPS on a dark green band and was worn on the lower right sleeve. The 1943 AFRIKA band represented a different class of insignia: it was a campaign award and was worn on the lower left sleeve. Its tan ground, palm-tree devices, and large AFRIKA lettering provided an immediately recognizable visual reference to service in the North African theater.

Initial regulations generally required six months of qualifying service in North Africa, although provisions existed for personnel wounded in the theater, those rendered unfit for tropical service by illness, and certain decorated servicemen. As the Axis position in Tunisia deteriorated during 1943, the regulations were amended so that qualifying personnel who had participated in the final fighting could receive the distinction after a shorter period of service. The cuff title was authorized across the Wehrmacht rather than being restricted solely to Heer personnel, reflecting the participation of Army, Luftwaffe, and Kriegsmarine elements in the campaign.
