Original German WWII 98k Bayonet by Berg & Co. Turned Fighting Knife with Shortened Scabbard - Dated 1939

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. In 1935 the German military introduced the K98k bolt action rifle or Karabiner 98 Kurz, as a replacement for the older GEW98 or Gewehr 98. A new, shorter bayonet was designed to go along with the shortened rifle. The K98 bayonet was officially named Seitengewehr 84/98 III or SG 84/98 III. The bayonet was designed as a close combat sidearm that could be placed on the tip of a K98. This particular example has been cut down significantly along with the scabbard, and has had the pommel with the bayonet lug completely removed for use as a fighting knife.

Model bayonet: Seitengewehr 84/98 III
Markings: 4833 b / BERG & CO. on ricasso, 0.32190k on crossguard.
Material: Blued steel
Grip material: Black bakelite

The blade of this example has been shortened to 6½” with an overall length of 9¾”. Condition is good, but definitely shows heavy wear and use. The end of the scabbard is Waffenamt marked. The blade is marked BERG & CO. with the spine being marked 39 indicating 1939 manufacture by the well-known maker Berg & Co. of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in Eastern Germany.

An original WWII 98k bayonet converted into a fighting knife, the first of its kind we have seen. Ready to research and display!
