Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original Danish Madsen 8mm machine gun tripod mount dating from the WWII era, serial number 162, complete with its remote trigger mechanism and functional soft recoil assembly. It is substantially complete, offered with original paint, and fully functional as best we can tell.
The Madsen tripod has a particularly important place in the history of machine guns; the Madsen tripod was the very first machine gun tripod to incorporate soft recoil. This feature greatly reduced or eliminated the effect of the gun's recoil on accuracy. The soft recoil feature allowed the gun to recoil straight back against a spring, which then returned the gun to its original position. This feature was later copied by German during WWII on the MG 34 and MG 42 Lafette tripod. The Madsen tripod was the FIRST to incorporate this feature, and thus has a very important place in the history of machine gun tripod development.
Tripod is offered in very good condition, with all original parts except for the barrel clamp, which looks to have been repaired or replaced at some point. Comes complete with remote trigger assembly, which still moves correctly when the handle on the back is pulled. It is marked correctly with MADSEN on the cross head and № 162 on the traverse adjustment / trigger mechanism.
We have checked, and all of the legs move correctly, and can be locked into place using the large wing nuts. The front leg can also be extended, though it is a bit stiff. Please note that many are reverse threaded. The recoil spring in the cross head is still functional, and the extension on the rear for the monopod fittings works as well. The traverse adjustment is functional, and both of the traverse stops move as well. The elevation controls works as well, and also has functional movable stops.
Overall condition is very good for a WWII era machine gun tripod. Much of the original olive green painted finish survives, with expected wear, scratches, exposed metal, and scattered oxidation from military use, storage, and age. The mechanisms remain substantially functional despite the more than 80 years that have passed since manufacture.
With its MADSEN marking, serial number 162, functioning soft recoil system, remote trigger assembly, adjustable traverse and elevation mechanisms, extendable front leg, and substantial surviving original olive green finish, this is an excellent representative example of the sophisticated Madsen machine gun mounting system. The stiff front leg extension, general finish wear and oxidation, and apparently repaired or replaced barrel clamp are all fully disclosed. It would display especially well in a Madsen machine gun, Danish military equipment, WWII machine gun accessory, tripod mount, or advanced crew served weapons collection.
