This is an original German WWII right side Waffen-SS collar tab associated with the 3rd SS-Panzer-Division “Totenkopf,” featuring the division’s "Death's Head" skull emblem machine embroidered in silver gray rayon thread on a black cloth base. The tab shows no visible evidence of having been sewn to a uniform and remains in excellent, apparently unissued condition.

The Waffen-SS expanded from the prewar SS military formations into a large armed organization during WWII, including German units as well as formations composed partly of foreign volunteers and conscripts. The 3rd SS-Panzer-Division “Totenkopf” used the skull emblem as its identifying divisional symbol.

The tab measures approximately 1 1/2" x 2 1/2". The skull insignia is neatly machine embroidered in silver gray rayon thread on black fabric wrapped around an internal lacquered buckram stiffener, with the folded edges secured by stitching on the reverse. This style of construction is often associated by collectors with stocks of insignia recovered from warehouses at the Dachau camp complex after the war, though no specific documented recovery history accompanies this individual example.

Condition is excellent overall, with only light storage wear. There are no visible stitch holes, stains, tears, or areas of fabric loss, and no indication that the tab was ever mounted to a uniform collar. The principal condition issue is some pulling and loosening of the reverse stitching, though the tab remains structurally sound and presents very well.

With its silver gray embroidered skull emblem, black cloth construction, lacquered buckram backing, clean apparently unissued condition, and correct right collar tab configuration, this is a strong example associated with the 3rd SS-Panzer-Division “Totenkopf.” It would display especially well in a Waffen-SS divisional insignia, Totenkopf collar tab, German WWII cloth insignia, or advanced SS uniform collection.

This elite division of the Waffen-SS of NSDAP Germany during World War II formed from the Standarten of the SS-TV. Its name, Totenkopf, is German for "death's head" – the skull and crossbones symbol – and it is thus sometimes referred to as the Death's Head Division.

The division was formed through the expansion of Kampfgruppe Eicke, a battle group named – in keeping with German military practice – after its commander, Theodor Eicke. Most of the battle group's personnel had been transferred to the Waffen SS from KZ camp guard units, which were known collectively as SS-Totenkopfverbände; others were former members of Selbstschutz: ethnic German militias that had committed war crimes in Poland.

The division became notorious for its brutality, and committed numerous war crimes, including the Le Paradis massacre.
