Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original German WWII 3rd Pattern M31 helmet liner manufactured in 1944 with an RBNr. designation stamped on the band. Intended for use in the M35, M40, and M42 Stahlhelm series, it features the late pattern galvanized steel liner band and is marked 68 n.A. / 61, indicating a 61cm liner assembly for a size 68 helmet shell.

These were produced in three main patterns, with the earliest having a single ply aluminum band around the exterior. This worked well during the pre-war years, but it was found that the force from the chinstrap could easily deform the band, so from around 1937-1939 an additional layer of aluminum was used to support the chin strap loops on the second pattern. Then around 1939, to save aluminum for use in Aircraft, the liner band was changed to the much more durable galvanized steel, the third pattern, which was used until the end of the war.

This example retains its galvanized steel outer band, which is marked on the left side:

indicating a 56cm liner assembly intended for a size 64 helmet shell. There is additionally a 61 stamped on the liner leather itself.

The leather liner retains all eight fingers, with a bit of a ninth at the rear seam, which remain supple and show evidence of light use. Each finger retains its leather reinforcement around the upper tie eyelet. The original top tie string is no longer present.

Overall condition is very good. The galvanized steel liner band remains intact, all eight leather fingers are present and supple, and the reinforcement pieces around the tie eyelets remain in place. There is some wear around the the rim where the leather bends over the inner band. The principal missing components are the top tie string and chinstrap.

With its 1944 RBNr. marking, 3rd Pattern galvanized steel construction, complete eight finger leather liner, and clear 68 n.A. / 61 size designation, this is a strong original M31 helmet liner assembly. It would fit especially well in a German WWII helmet component, M35, M40, M42, or restoration oriented collection requiring a period liner for a size 68 shell.
