Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original German WWII 3rd Pattern M31 helmet liner manufactured by Biedermann & Czarnikow and dated 1943. Intended for use in the M35, M40, and M42 Stahlhelm series, it features the late pattern galvanized steel liner band and is marked 64 n.A. / 56, indicating a 56cm liner assembly for a size 64 helmet shell.

These were produced in three main patterns, with the earliest having a single ply aluminum band around the exterior. This worked well during the pre-war years, but it was found that the force from the chinstrap could easily deform the band, so from around 1937-1939 an additional layer of aluminum was used to support the chin strap loops on the second pattern. Then around 1939, to save aluminum for use in Aircraft, the liner band was changed to the much more durable galvanized steel, the third pattern, which was used until the end of the war.

This example retains its galvanized steel outer band, which is marked on the left side:

indicating a 56cm liner assembly intended for a size 64 helmet shell. There is additionally a 56 stamped inside a circle on the liner leather itself.

This liner was made by Biedermann & Czarnikow, a German company who moved operations to Łódź in occupied Poland to take advantage of the slave labor in the ghetto located there. NSDAP authorities renamed Łódź to Litzmannstadt in honor of the German General Karl Litzmann who had captured the city in the previous World War.

The leather liner retains all eight fingers, which remain supple and show relatively little evidence of use. Each finger retains its leather reinforcement around the upper tie eyelet. The original top tie string is no longer present.

The leather fits the inner band closely, with one rear finger positioned slightly inside the rear seam. The separate 58 marking on the leather is retained exactly as observed, while the assembled liner band itself is clearly marked 64 n.A. / 56.

No chinstrap is currently attached.

Overall condition is very good. The galvanized steel liner band remains intact, all eight leather fingers are present and supple, and the reinforcement pieces around the tie eyelets remain in place. The principal missing components are the top tie string and chinstrap.

With its 1943 Biedermann & Czarnikow marking, 3rd Pattern galvanized steel construction, complete eight finger leather liner, and clear 64 n.A. / 56 size designation, this is a strong original M31 helmet liner assembly. It would fit especially well in a German WWII helmet component, M35, M40, M42, or restoration oriented collection requiring a period liner for a size 64 shell.
