Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice May 1944 dated Luftwaffe 50L fuel oil drum, which measures approximately 23 inches (58cm) high with a 15 inch (38cm) diameter. The base has an embossed Luftwaffe Eagle with a date and various maker logos:
5 (logo) 44
(Luftwaffe Eagle)
LE3 IIB
(L in Triangle)
The can still bears original German WW2 Luftwaffe gray/blue paint with white stenciling on both ends, as well as on the sides. It appears to state:
Empfg. F L P 4 / Oslo
Feldpost Nr L 00751
This seems to indicate receipt (Empfang) at a Luftwaffe installation in Oslo, Norway. During WWII, Oslo was the headquarters of Luftflotte 5 (Air Fleet 5), which from April 24, 1940 onward was the organization responsible for Luftwaffe activity in Occupied Norway throughout the Second World War. The various markings probably trace the history of the drum, though unfortunately the markings on the top are not legible.
The drum has both the primary and vent caps present, though the primary cap or the top are dented, so it can no longer be screwed closed. Overall condition is very good with the expected dents, dings, and scratches from service during a war.
These field oil drum cans are exceptionally rare with only a few known embossed Luftwaffe eagle examples known to exist.
