Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original German WWII Kriegsmarine tropical M41 field cap manufactured by Heinrich Balke of Bremen in 1942 and marked size 59 1/2. Constructed from khaki cotton whipcord with yellow gold Kriegsmarine insignia and a blue gray interior lining, it is an uncommon naval variation of the tropical field cap associated with German forces serving in warm weather and Mediterranean theaters.

German tropical uniforms, headgear, and equipment were developed rapidly in preparation for the deployment of German forces to North Africa beginning in early 1941. The tropical M41 field cap was loosely based on the mountain troops’ Bergmütze, with modifications suited to hot weather service.

Within the Kriegsmarine, tropical field caps were worn by naval personnel serving ashore, including coastal artillery and other ground based units. Although caps of this type are strongly associated with Mediterranean and North African service, no individual unit history or direct provenance accompanies this example.

The cap is constructed from khaki cotton whipcord with dual ply side and rear panels stitched down around the body. These panels slope gently toward the front center in the characteristic M41 configuration.

Each side has two painted, non-magnetic ventilation grommets positioned immediately below the outer edge of the crown seam. The painted finish remains very well preserved. The center crown seam is stitched through the interior lining for added strength.

The front center bears a BeVo style machine embroidered Kriegsmarine national eagle worked in yellow gold thread on a folded woven tan backing. The downward sloping scalloped front panel carries a BeVo style national tricolor cockade on a diamond shaped woven tan base.

Both insignia are machine stitched only through the outer fabric layer rather than through the interior lining.

The forward visor is covered in matching cotton twill and contains an internal cardboard stiffener. A slightly raised lip is visible along the upper forward edge where the exterior fabric overlaps.

The underside of the visor has reinforcement stitching along the forward edge and through the center. This stitching does not extend through the upper exterior fabric. The visor remains flexible and has no major cracks or severe creases, although it is somewhat floppy in places due to age and wear to the internal cardboard stiffener.

The interior is lined in square woven blue gray canvas and retains faint but legible manufacturer, size, and date markings:

The cap remains in very good service used condition. The exterior shows moderate handling and wear without tears or comparable structural damage. The interior lining displays staining from perspiration and natural skin oils, particularly across the forehead area.

The insignia remain well defined, the ventilation grommets retain their painted finish, and the cap maintains its original form despite the softened visor stiffener. The staining and wear give the cap an honest service used appearance without detracting from its strong display quality.
