  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original German WWII maroon dress fez associated with the 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS “Handschar” (1st Croatian). Retaining its original embroidered insignia, black tassel, and leather sweatband, it is an appealing service used example of the distinctive headgear worn by personnel of this predominantly Bosnian Muslim formation.

The fez is constructed from maroon wool felt with a soft, fuzzy nap. The front retains its embroidered eagle and skull insignia, both attached to the body with black stitching. The black top tassel remains firmly connected to its central stalk and shows only minor fraying at the ends. The small tack stitches originally used to secure the tassel against the body of the fez are no longer present.

This example remains in overall very good service used condition. The maroon felt exterior shows general staining, wear, and pilling, together with several holes that may be the result of moth damage. Additional moth tracking is visible in the nap of the fabric. The embroidered insignia show age related wear and staining but remain securely attached.

The interior retains a full leather sweatband around the circumference. The leather is age worn and stiff, with a tear near the front and an additional small hole. Stitching securing the sweatband has pulled loose in numerous areas, leaving portions partially or completely detached from the fez. A very faint size marking is present at the rear but is no longer legible.

Two principal colors of this fez were produced. The field gray version was intended for service and field wear, while the maroon version was worn with dress uniforms and for walking out or ceremonial occasions. The distinctive fez reflected the regional and religious background of many of the division’s recruits and was worn with the standard embroidered eagle and skull insignia seen on this example. Similar headgear was later authorized for other Balkan formations.

The 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS “Handschar” was organized in 1943 for operations against partisan forces in occupied Yugoslavia. Its enlisted ranks consisted primarily of Bosnian Muslim personnel, while many command and specialist positions were held by German or ethnic German personnel. The division’s German designation was:

    13. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS “Handschar” (kroatische Nr. 1)

The name Handschar referred to the curved saber used as the formation’s identifying symbol. After training outside Yugoslavia, the division returned to the Balkans and took part primarily in anti-partisan operations.

Original examples of this specialized headgear have been extensively reproduced, making construction, materials, insignia attachment, and signs of genuine age important considerations. Based on its wool felt construction, retained insignia, aged leather sweatband, period style tassel, and consistent service wear, this example displays the characteristics expected of an original period fez.

With its retained embroidered insignia, original tassel, complete though partially detached sweatband, and unmistakable maroon dress configuration, this is a visually distinctive example of specialized German WWII foreign formation headgear. It would display particularly well in a Handschar Division, Balkan campaign, Waffen-SS headgear, foreign volunteer, or advanced German uniform collection.
