  • Original Item: Only One Available. German WWI Ersatz bayonets with their original 12" blades are very hard to find today. The classic work by J.ANTHONY CARTER, GERMAN BAYONETS, VOLUME THREE published in 1992 is the complete work covering all types of WWI Ersatz bayonets and cherished by bayonet collectors everywhere.

Anthony Carter's Reference EB8 appearing on Page 46-47 is the model we offer here.  It features a heavy cast steel hilt with split muzzle ring, with a 12" unfullered spear point blade, with imperial proofs on the spine and ricasso. The reinforced two piece crossguard is unmarked, and overall length is 17 1/4 inches. It comes complete with a nice steel scabbard, with the stylized fag marking in an oval. This company manufactured a very large number of these scabbards for ersatz bayonets. The scabbard has some heavy denting along with paint loss and some material loss along the throat.

    J. Anthony Carter died in 2001 but his four volume work is acknowledged as the supreme reference work on the subject most especially the Ersatz Volume (No.3) which was his great passion throughout his lifetime.

The Ersatz bayonet program reflects the extraordinary industrial pressures placed on Germany during WWI. Rather than relying solely on the more elaborately manufactured prewar service bayonets, German authorities accepted a wide variety of simplified patterns using pressed, cast, and fabricated steel components. The result was an unusually broad family of designs that has since become a specialized field of bayonet collecting.

The combination of the Carter EB8 configuration, 12-inch un-fullered spear-point blade, Imperial proofs, heavy steel hilt, split muzzle ring, reinforced crossguard, and FAG-marked steel scabbard makes this a strong representative example of German WWI Ersatz production. Its complete bayonet-and-scabbard configuration is especially desirable for collectors studying the numerous substitute patterns introduced under wartime production pressures.
