Original Item: Only One Available. This is only the second Carter Type EB2 we have had the pleasure of offering here at IMA! We often encounter the Ersatz bayonets but never the rare “Trench Knife” bayonet combo. This classification comes from Anthony Carter’s book German ersatz bayonets. In this book (published in 1976), Carter provided designations to identify most of the known ersatz bayonet variations in order to more easily categorize them for collectors. This example can be found on page 33 of the classic work by J.ANTHONY CARTER, GERMAN BAYONETS, VOLUME THREE published in 1992.
EB2 Bayonets were made by several companies; Gottlieb Hammesfahr & Co, F. W. Horster & Co, Robert Klaas & Co, and Franz Koller & Co. This example is only marked with a 3 on the ricasso.
This example appears as if it was recovered from a battlefield due to the evidence of past pitting and oxidation present on the blade. The handle retains much of its original feldgrau paint. The blade was used heavily and may be worn down just a bit, with very heavy oxidation pitting across. The included scabbard is the correct type for the knife and is constructed of black painted rolled steel with remnants of the leather belt hanger. The securing strap is retains but the receiving end of the snap is gone. The paint does appear to be original and is retained at 55%.
A lovely, rather rare example of an EB2 ready for further research and display.
