This is the second type, known as the Eierhandgranate M1917 Neuer Art, meaning “Egg Hand Grenade, New Model.” It features the distinctive raised band around the center of the body, which was added to provide a more secure grip than the smooth surface of the earlier pattern.

The original transit plug remains installed and can be unscrewed from the body. This component is a transit plug, not a fuze. A hole has been drilled through the bottom of the grenade as part of its deactivation, allowing the empty internal cavity to be inspected. There are no explosive components present.

Germany entered World War I with the heavy, ball-shaped Kugelhandgranate, which was primarily suited to pioneers and attacks against fortified positions. Its weight and construction made it less practical for widespread battlefield use, leading to the adoption of several improved grenade designs.

The M1915 Stielhandgranate, or stick grenade, became one of the best known German grenade patterns of the war. However, its long wooden handle could be cumbersome in confined spaces and made it less convenient to carry in large numbers. The compact Model 1917 Eierhandgranate was developed to supplement it, giving German soldiers a grenade that was easier to carry and could be thrown approximately 40 meters or farther.

Early versions had a smooth body that could be difficult to grip, particularly in wet or muddy conditions. The later n/A pattern addressed this issue by adding the raised central band seen on this example. The compact egg grenade concept was revisited during WWII with the separate Model 39 design.

With its original transit plug, distinct n/A grip band, clear body markings, and visibly empty interior, this is a desirable example of an iconic Imperial German WWI grenade.
