  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic water can as used on the Water Cooled Maxim Machine Gun. While the can is of German origin, it was captured by the Americans, as identified by the stenciled information present on the side:

    SOUVENIR OF
    AMERICAN VICTORY
    ST. MIHIEL
    SEPT. 12 - 16. 1918

The Battle of Saint-Mihiel was a major World War I battle fought from 12–15 September 1918, involving the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) and 110,000 French troops under the command of General John J. Pershing of the United States against German positions. The U.S. Army Air Service played a significant role in this action.

This battle marked the first use of the terms "D-Day" and "H-Hour" by the Americans

The can comes with a carrying handle, a large brass filler cap, and a brass swing-out water spout. It was an essential item that was issued with every water-cooled machine gun used by the Central Powers during World War I. The Maxim gun was water-cooled, which allowed it to maintain its high rate of fire for a longer period than air-cooled guns. However, this also added extra weight and complexity, making it heavier and less flexible to use. In addition to the gunner, other crew members were required to quickly reload, spot targets, and carry ammunition and water. Moving or mounting the heavy weapon required several men.

A great example ready for further research and display.
