Item Description
Original item: Only One Available. Using J.ANTHONY CARTER'S marvelous German Ersatz Bayonets book as a reference, this bayonet type appears on page 19 and is referenced as EB3. ERSATZ means "FAKE" in German when applied to a noun like ERSATZ COFFEE, that were not made from Coffee beans but some root vegetable but tasted somewhat similar. Ersatz bayonets were Emergency bayonets manufactured usually all of steel or with brass that could fit, with very slight adjustment, any of the German Infantry Rifles being used in WWI. This included the Mauser 71, Mauser 71/84, Gew 88 Rifles and of course the standard Gewehr M-1898 long Mauser Rifle currently in service. Some bayonets were even made to fit Austrian Mannlichers and French and Belgian rifles that may have been pressed into service. This example we have tried on a GEW 88, but it is slightly loose around the muzzle, and also fits on Mauser 1871 and 1871/84 rifles.
Ersatz bayonets, especially those with 12" blades, are pretty hard to find today, especially in nice original condition still showing traces of its original green paint. Ready to display!
