  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice German Style Double Barrel Percussion Coaching Shotgun or Carbine, offered in "Relic" condition, ready to display as is, or to restore. It is in 22 Bore, a smaller shotgun size, so it was probably also used for solid shot and other types of projectiles. These smaller guns were often referred to as "Carbines", and were very popular for self-defense during the Coaching era. The shorter length made them much easier to bring to bear, and the close distances made the accuracy of a longer barrel a non-issue.

The stock is carved very much in the German style, with a cheek piece on the left butt stock, and a decorative carved hand grip, which is also checkered. The mounts are of engraved iron, and are quite decorative. The percussion locks are also engraved, including the hammers, and both have brass plaques on them, which are unfortunately quite worn. We cannot make out the right side, but the left side looks to say "Torino", the city of Turin in Italy. This could mean that it was made in Turin, a known gun-making area, or possibly that was where it was last used. We looked under the barrel, and did not see any definitive markings. Definitely some excellent research potential!

Condition is not the best, which is why we are selling this as a "relic" for decoration, or possibly for restoration, as it definitely shows a high level of original quality. Both locks have broken or missing mainsprings, so they are not functional at present. The stock also is cracked through the wrist area, which happened long ago apparently. Two bent iron straps have been inlaid into the back of the wrist and screwed in place, and both show significant age. The original ramrod is missing, replaced with a wooden dowel.

A very nice mid 19th century coaching gun, ready to restore or display as is!
