Item Description
Original Items: Only One Set of Two Available. Here we have two very nice Pre-WWII Zeppelin-Weltfahrten (Zeppelin World Tour) softcover "cigarette card" album, volumes 1 and II. These were purchased without the included pictures, which were then received along with packs of cigarettes. These served the dual purpose of helping to stiffen the packaging, as well as being collectible items.
These books are basically a history book of flight in Germany, culminating with the creation of the Zeppelin rigid airships produced by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin during the early 20th century. The first book in particular has design schematics, pictures, historical descriptions, and more on the air ships. The rest of the book has a particular focus on the airship LZ-127 "Graf Zeppelin", a craft named after the country's airship pioneer, Count (Graf) Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The ship flew passenger flights starting in 1928 and ventured on many routes, including to the Arctic. LZ-127 operated until 1937, the year of the loss of its fellow airship Hindenburg. The round-the-world flight took place in 1929, and is described in the pages of the book, complete with maps showing the flight path.
The second book focuses on some of the early losses / fires, including damage to the factory, which happened during WWI. There are some pictures of burning dirigibles, as well as the metal frame of on that went down. The rest of the book is devoted to additional voyages of LZ-127 "Graf Zeppelin", some of which repeated earlier airship flights from decades prior. There looks to have been another arctic flight, as well as voyages to Austria, Spain, South America, and other locations.
The first album is approximately 50 pages long, in German, and features all of the original 264 miniature black and white silver bromide "cigarette card" pictures, glued to their correct locations on the various pages. The second album also features most of the pictures, however there are definitely multiple pages that were torn out/ removed from the album at some point, particularly towards the end. Both measure approximately 13 1/4"W x 9 3/8"H x 3/4", and are offered in very good used condition, showing some staining and wear to the exterior.
