Original German Pre-WWII Luftwaffe Blue M34 Tornister Backpack with Shoulder Straps by Gebrüder Sparfeld - dated 1938

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. Derived from the Model 1931 used by Mountain troops, the Tornister (Knapsack) Backpack or Rucksack became the standard pattern used by all parts of the Wehrmacht. It went through various versions including the M34, and later the M41. There were incremental changes between the major revisions as well, mainly related to the materials used.

This is a very nice example of the Luftwaffe version of the Tornister, in the correct Luftwaffe blue color, with early pattern brown leather straps and buckles, so this is closest to the M34 Pattern. These are very close to the Army Heer Model, except for the color and pocket configuration. Some types were designed to interface with the Y-straps and A-frame, however this type is a standalone pack. It is maker marked and dated on the back between the shoulder straps:

Gebrüder Sparfeld

This is a known maker of leather and textile goods seen on many pre and early war items. Condition is very good, especially considering the age. The shoulder straps are complete and intact, and are the type permanently attached to the rings. Each splits into two parts, one to attach to the pack, and one to attach to the ammo pouches on the service belt. The right side strap has a simple triangle that goes over a hook the pack, while the other has a spring clip that attaches to a D ring. The hardware is all aluminum, as is typical for pre and early war production.

The interior is very nice, with the expected wear from age. There is even a name tag marked Blume stitched to the top flap. All pockets and compartments look to be intact. The various buckles and straps also all look to be present, though some of the leather fittings to attach additional gear are torn. Overall it has a great service worn look, an item that was "actually there"!

A very nice and rare example of a Luftwaffe M34 Tornister Backpack, ready to display!
