Original Item: Only One Available. Known by collectors as "ice cream cone" binoculars (due to the shape), these are classic 8x50 "Hunting" binoculars, from the interwar period, which were popular with officers in WWII due to their higher power. Made by Hensoldt & Sohne Werke A-G in Wetzlar, Germany, this beautiful set of 8x50 binoculars is covered with very nice brown leather.
This pair is marked with maker HENSOLDT-WETZLAR on the eyepiece hinge, indicating that these were produced prior to 1941, when the company started using 3 letter code bmj. The serial number 87481 is is listed on the under side of the hinge. On the opposing side of the hinge is the series marking Hirsch - Dialyt and the power is also marked with the numbers 8x50. "Hirsch" is German for Deer, so these are literally "Deer Binoculars". They measure approximately 8" x 5 1/2" x 2 1/4".
Condition is good, though they definitely do show the age. The leather has some salt deposits on it from moisture and sweat, and there is wear to the black finish, with the underlying brass showing. The right bakelite eye cup is unfortunately missing. The focus adjustment works, but it is VERY stiff. The optics are still clear, and work well. The original neck strap is present, however it is broken off on one end.
Also included is a fine condition brown leather case with a velvet-lined top, held closed by a spring loaded catch on the front. The case measures 9" x 6" x 3 1/2", and is in very good condition, with intact stitching and a complete shoulder strap.
This is still a wonderful set complete with case offered in very nice condition.
