  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original German pre-WWII embroidered banner commemorating the 15th German Gymnastics Festival held in Stuttgart in 1933. Measuring approximately 26 1/2" long by 5" wide, it is double sided with chain stitched festival lettering and emblems on the front, a political emblem on the red reverse, a red, white, and black fringe, and its original style metal suspension bar and attachment tie.

The front bears the chain stitched inscription:

    15. Deutſches Turnfeſt Stuttgart 1933

    This translates as:

15th German Gymnastics Festival Stuttgart 1933

The lettering uses the period long-s form seen in the words Deutſches and Turnfeſt.

Beneath the inscription is an interlocking DT monogram, which we assume is the logo of the festival, or the organization that runs it. The exact interpretation of the individual letters has not been independently confirmed from the banner alone.

An embroidered oak leaf and acorn sprig appears at the top. At the lower end is a black horse on a yellow shield, representing the coat of arms of Stuttgart. The reverse is red and carries a black mobile swas within a white circular field. A fringe approximately 2" long in red, white, and black is attached along the bottom edge. The upper end has a sewn suspension sleeve containing a bent metal hanging bar. An attachment tie remains present at the top for display or suspension.

The banner remains in very good overall condition. Both sides show light staining consistent with age and display. Minor moth damage is present in the wool portions. No major tears, extensive fabric loss, or missing decorative components are described.

With its clearly embroidered 1933 Stuttgart festival inscription, period long-s lettering, oak leaf decoration, Stuttgart horse shield, double-sided construction, original fringe, and surviving suspension hardware, this is an attractive small-format commemorative banner from the 15th German Gymnastics Festival. The light staining, minor moth damage, bent hanger, and uncertain precise interpretation of the interlocking monogram are fully disclosed. It would display particularly well in a German gymnastics, Stuttgart regional history, prewar sports festival, embroidered banner, or 1933 political and cultural collection.
