Original Item: Only One Available. This is an item that simply reeks of romance! In use for centuries, the German Hirschfänger (Deer Catcher) long hunting daggers have always made lovely display pieces, as well as military sidearms. Many of the early bayonets used by the various German States were based on the Hirschfänger design, which is both simple and elegant, almost a short sword in practical terms.
This is a great Pre-WWI era Hirschfänger with a great scabbard. This example is in the “dagger” variety with a much thicker and wider blade. The blade has no etching and the only marking is the "Kings's Head" (königskopf) trademark of legendary German maker Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen. This company is a famous manufacturer of military swords and cutlery in Solingen, Germany - a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making.
The 12 ⅜” blade is in good shape overall with oxidation spotting across and some past cleaning. The green felt blade buffer is almost entirely worn away with a small fragment still retained. The pommel plate is a bit loose but has a nice pattern. The overall length is 17 ½”.
The 12 ⅞” scabbard is in good shape with two small loops on the throat for attachment to a belt, though we haven’t seen this style before. The leather has some crazing and wear.
