Original German Post-WWI Weimar Period Army NCO Dove's Head Sword with Scabbard & Troddel

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a nice example of the plain nickel plated Dove Head sword worn by Army NCO's during the Weimar period, complete with the correct scabbard and an NCO Troddel Knot. This sword design is a simplified version of the Officer's dove's head sword, without the decorative designs and engraving usually seen on the hilt. It has the standard "P" guard used on German dress swords, with a simple cross guard and plain rain guards (chappes). The hilt is nickel plated steel from what we can tell, and retains most of the nickel plating, with a lovely patina of age.

The grip is a very nice example, with black celluloid over a wood base. It is wrapped with three strands of twisted nickel-plated wire, with the central strand being thicker than the outer two. The wrappings are still tight around the grip, which shows no cracking and is still tight on the blade. The original ;red felt blade buffer is still present, however it is definitely worn from age and oxidation.

The scabbard of this example is blued steel, and has wear and denting on both sides, though this does not interfere with sheathing the blade. It still retains it's original hanger loop as well as the slot for the belt hook. Overall there is an oxidized patina, as well as wear, typical of scabbard that saw long service. Tight around the hanger loop is a leather and bullion NCO Troddel knot, which has rows of silver bullion and red. The end knot is silver, with a black, red, and silver insert, and overall it is in good condition, though a lot of the bullion thread from the strap has pulled, and now is hanging loose.

The 32 inch long blade of this example is in very good condition, with almost all of the original nickel plate retained. There are a few areas of oxidation and finish loss near the edges, as well as the usual runner wear. The blade is not marked, but that is relatively common for these. Blade blanks were often purchased by retailers, who fit and finished them, often adding designs to the blade, depending on the wishes of the purchaser. This example is a plain blade with a lovely look.

Overall an very good condition German NCO's Sword, ready to hang on the wall!
