Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very macabre painting dated 1927 to the reverse. The painting depicts a very troubling trench scene including one Imperial German soldier bleeding out to the left, another holding his face in his hands to the right, and a third soldier climbing onto No Man’s Land. A British Landship tank approaches in the background, crushing the barbed wire emplacements in its patch. The painting is in a frame measuring 11 ½ x 15 ½”.
The painting appears of the period, and is signed on the back P. Hipke(?) / 1927. The canvas is now a bit wavy from age, but the painting has held up rather well overall, though there is some loss in areas.
A very interesting painting, ready for further research and display.
