Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original example of the classic German 1871 Mauser Rifle Bayonet which features a brass hilt. Sword bayonet for use with the 11 mm M1871 Mauser rifle. This bayonet was also used extensively with the 8mm M1888 Commission Rifle.
The M1871 bayonet has an unusual brass grip with diagonal serrations on the right grip, while the left grip is smooth. The blade measures 18 1/2 inches long, and is fullered on both sides. The bayonet has regimental markings with unit marking, 100. R.7. 95.
The blade was manufactured by P.D.LÜNESCHLOSS, SOLINGEN, and is marked as such on the blade. The company was founded by Peter Daniel Lüneschloss in 1810 as a cutlery maker, and by 1850 was manufacturing edged weapons under military contracts. They were located in Solingen, a legendary blade producing city in Western Germany, which has a history of edged weapons dating back centuries.
The blade is also stamped on the spine with a Crown over an "A" for König Albert of SAXONY who reigned from 1873 until 1902. Also "80" appears under the "A" indicating the year of manufacture to be 1880.
A note regarding German Royalty: The German Empire was a confederation of semi-independent states. The King of Prussia served as the Imperial head of state and was given the title Kaiser (Emperor). The monarchs of the other German states such as Saxony held the title König (King).
Some old rust staining to left side of blade, and the scabbard leather has deteriorated somewhat, but overall in very good collectible condition, ready to display.
