Original German M1871 Brass Hilt Mauser Rifle Bayonet with Scabbard by Gebruder Simson in Suhl & Assembled at Erfurt in Scabbard & Leather Frog - Dated 1878

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original example of the classic German 1871 Mauser Rifle Bayonet which features a brass hilt. Sword bayonet for use with the 11 mm M1871 Mauser rifle. This bayonet was also used extensively with the 8mm M1888 Commission Rifle.
The M1871 bayonet has an unusual brass grip with diagonal serrations on the right grip, while the left grip is smooth. The blade was manufactured by Gebruder Simson in Suhl. Gebruder Simson became Simson & Co. in 1880. However, the bayonet was assembled by the Prussian Royal Arsenal at Erfurt. The blade is marked on the spine with the Royal Cypher of Kaiser Wilhelm I of Prussia, who reigned from 18611888. Under this is 78, for the year of acceptance, 1878. It was delivered to the Arsenal at ERFURT which is stamped on the other side of the blade under a crown marking.
A note regarding German Royalty: The German Empire was a confederation of semi-independent states. The King of Prussia served as the Imperial head of state and was given the title Kaiser (Emperor). The monarchs of the other German states held the title König (King).
The crossguard is stamped with a regimental unit marking, 137.R.6.25. This would denote the 25th bayonet, 6th Company, 137th (2nd Lower Alsatian) Infantry Regiment. This regiment was active from 11 March 1887 to 1919, with its headquarters at Hagenau. The bayonet button is in good condition and it will still fit to a rifle.
The original brass-mounted leather scabbard is in good condition but there is heavy bending wear to the leather in the middle. The scabbard is attached to a period leather frog at the long frog button, but the leather of the frog is heavily stiff and worn as shown.
A very rare bayonet to find in this configuration. Ready for further research and display.
