  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an extremely early German bayonet, purportedly dating to around 1790. The design and rudimentary attachment system is similar to examples we have seen for the early 19th century German Baker & Brunswick rifles, but we could not find an exact match to this example.

The hilt is of brass with two loops attached to one side. The spine of the hilt has an iron tension system, so when the bayonet is attached to the rifle, the small tab at the end is lifted and inserted into place, it locks the bayonet. The crossguard has an attached scallop shell rain chape.

The 21 ⅝” blade is still shiny in places but where it is not is very heavy oxidation, mostly in the middle and at the ricasso. There are no markings retained if there were ever any at all. The overall length is 26 ¾”.

The original brass-mounted leather scabbard is intact but is in very rough condition with the leather now shrunken and the stitching now all undone. The throat and drag show heavy brass oxidization and verdigris. Due to leather shrinkage, it no longer fits entirely over the bayonet, with roughly ⅛-¼” uncovered.

A very rare and early bayonet, likely the earliest non-socket bayonet we have ever offered. Ready for further research and display.
