  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. Frederick II was the monarch of Prussia from 1740 until his death in 1786. He was the last Hohenzollern monarch titled King in Prussia, declaring himself King of Prussia after annexing Royal Prussia from the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1772. His most significant accomplishments include military successes in the Silesian wars, reorganisation of the Prussian Army, the First Partition of Poland, and patronage of the arts and the Enlightenment. Prussia greatly increased its territories and became a major military power in Europe under his rule. He became known as Frederick the Great (German: Friedrich der Große) and was nicknamed "Old Fritz" (German: der Alte Fritz).

This is an outstanding hand-painted panel portrait depicting Frederick the Great staring left. He wears the The Order of the Black Eagle on his chest. The portrait is ovular in a rectangular frame with small marble pieces, measuring 4¾ x 5 ½” with a hanging ring. It almost looks as if Frederick is trapped within “The Wall”!

The back of the frame shows a page from a German book, commonly used as backing for these. We have not attempted to translate any of it.

    An outstanding display piece.
