Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is one of the most tremendous walking sticks we have offered, and certainly the most meticulously crafted. Carved by a French soldier during the Second World War, this “Jay-Jay”, as French soldiers referred to them, bears an intricately carved snake which wraps around the length of the cane and sticks out his forked copper tongue at you. The cane is inscribed with HAM 1940 under a 4-leaf clover and over a Cross of Lorraine and a Heart bearing the initials BA. Ham is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France, northern France, close to the Maginot Line.
The cane measures roughly 39” in overall length. The bottom has a pike for better ground contact, with a small brass spacer over it. The brass spacer is a bit loose, but this isn’t much of an issue. The cane itself has vinery wrapped around its length under the snake, some truly unique detailing, the work of a master. There are many small woodworm holes across the cane which has given it a lovely overall patina. The spherical handle of the cane is splitting on one end as shown, and a period chain was added through a small hole under the handle for affixation to the wrist.
The snake is very well-designed with lovely patterns executed across his body. Both his tongue and eyes are copper and have aged very well. One arm of the Cross of Lorraine has chipped off, but otherwise there’s just the woodworm damage.
A tremendous and one-of-a-kind walking stick, ready for further research and display!
