Original French WWI M-1915 Horizon Blue Field Grade Officer’s Kepi

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Scarce WWI French M-1915 Officer’s Kepiin “Horizon Blue” Wool. Pre/Early WWI French Uniforms were Dark Blue and Red. In 1915 the standardization of the Horizon Blue uniforms became universal, with the older style uniforms becoming rapidly replaced. As most field grade uniform pieces were very well used, very little has survived to the present day. This is a unique cap in that no rank insignia was ever applied. Only the bullion chinstrap was ever added. Apparently the original owner wanted to not attract the attention of German Sharpshooters!

Cap is fitted with a gold bullion officer chinstrap. The chinstrap is intact and unbroken (it is quite rare to find an intact chinstrap). The chinstrap has discolored with age. Original Sweatband is intact, and showing signs of wear and age. Polished Cotton lining is intact as well, and strangely enough, does not bear a maker stamp. Visor is of painted leather, which shows signs of cracking and crazing from age. The original visor binding is intact. Size of the cap is roughly a 7 ⅛.

WWI Horizon Blue material is very difficult to come across in the collector market today. Naturally, these items were typically used until discarded. Add in the high attrition of the Great War, massive losses within the French Army add to the scarcity of these items, especially early war material. An excellent example ready for display!
