Original French Seven Years’ War Era Glorious Officer’s Small Sword with Engraved Blade, Gilt Shell Guard, & Silver Wire-Bound Grip - Circa 1760

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous French officer’s small sword with an intricate gilt-inlaid hilt with a lovely silver wire-wrapped grip. This is one of the most ornate small swords we have offered, and the engraved blade adds yet another layer of prestige. The sword dates to around 1760, during the Seven Years’ War.
The sword features a delicate three sided blade 29¾-inches in length and beautifully engraved with floral motifs on the first 8 inches. The blade does show oxidation which has obstructed some of the engraving, with some small chips along the edges in places, but it remains at full length and is in fair condition overall.
The lovely shell guard retains the majority of its gilt and presents very well. The underside of the shell retains the same design as the top, with the rest of the hilt protruding like the top of a column. It is designed with a similar pattern to that of the ball pommel, which also retains the majority of its gilt. The grip of the sword consists of a lovely pattern of iron, brass, and silver wire wrapped in a beautiful pattern with braided silver wire at each end. The wire is a bit loose across, which speaks volumes of the preservation of the sword across the past 250 years, as the wire is still mostly in the correct configuration.
This is an absolutely stunning example, one of the nicest small swords we have ever offered. Ready for further research and display!
