Original Item: Only One Available. This is a scarce original French Model 1825 Carabinier helmet dating from the Bourbon Restoration period, with a brass skull, ornate brass comb, Medusa-head terminal, embossed grenade front plate, overlapping brass chin scales, and surviving red side plume. The helmet shows substantial age and several old repairs, most notably a later replacement comb mane, a broken chinstrap connection now tied with string, some breakage behind Medusa’s head, and electrical tape securing the plume together. Despite these issues, the major original brass components remain present and give the helmet an impressive early 19th-century heavy-cavalry appearance.
The helmet has a brass skull, brass comb embossed with beaded fluting and terminating with the head of Medusa. A small punched hole is present through Medusa’s head. The upper portion of the comb behind the Medusa terminal has also suffered damage. It is partly opened and somewhat compressed or crushed, although the overall profile remains presentable for display.
The original leather liner is unfortunately missing, however, the front visor retains some leather on its underside, which appears to have been originally attached to the liner. There are no dates of markings present on the helmet aside from what appears to be a serial number stamped into the brass on the back of the helmet. The numbers appear as 711 on the top and 1831 present on the bottom. The 1831 may be a date of manufacture, but we cannot say for sure.
The leather backing to the chinstrap pieces may be replacements, but we cannot say for sure.
The top comb behind Medusa appears to have broken open and is a bit crunched, but thankfully it looks fine for display. The red comb mane was added later as a replacement, and is attached with wire and string. The exterior of the helmet shows minor oxidation staining and loss of finish. The interior retains an old museum tag on the underside of the front visor, but it is too worn to read. There is some denting to the interior and misshaping of the brass.
The classical decorative language seen here, including the large brass comb, Medusa terminal, grenade device, and elaborate chin scales, reflects the highly ornate appearance retained by French heavy cavalry during the post-Napoleonic period. Related French cavalry helmets of the same era also used combinations of black or red horsehair, comb manes, and colored plumes depending on branch, regiment, and rank.
Condition overall is fair and heavily aged, with the helmet remaining substantially complete in its major brass components but showing numerous old losses and repairs. The original liner is absent, the chin-scale connection is broken, the red plume is taped, the replacement mane is attached with wire and string, the comb is damaged behind Medusa, and there is some denting and brass oxidation throughout.
Even in this condition, surviving Model 1825 Carabinier helmets are scarce, and the retained brass skull, ornate comb, Medusa terminal, grenade plate, chin scales, plume fitting, and old collection tag make this a compelling early French cavalry artifact.
