Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is a very good grouping of original French pre-WWII and early WWII 81mm mortar equipment, consisting of an inert 81mm F.A. Mle 1924-27 mortar projectile, a small wooden ammunition-related crate, and a scarce metal transit chest intended to carry three complete 81mm rounds for the Mortier Mle 1927-31. Together, the three pieces represent the ammunition and transport equipment associated with France’s standard Brandt 81mm mortar system during the interwar period and the 1940 campaign. The included projectile is completely inert and Not Available For Export.
The 27/27 mortar round is stenciled on the body in white ink:
SC
AMS 40
SC E 64 39
44
The body below the fuze and above the grooves is painted yellow, while the bottom piece of the fuze housing is painted red. The yellow portion is stamped in the metal ACC 68 RAY 40. This likely dates the body to 1940. The fuze is stamped CP / 140. The very tip of the fuze is heavily oxidized as shown.
The round measures 12 ¼” long.
The included chest has two small metal bars at the ends for securing of the lid. The lid is attached by two small canvas straps. The chest measures 10 ½ x 6 ½ x 5 ¼”. The front of the crate is marked:
98 BELAIS IRLATLS
Pour Projectiles de 81m/m F.A.Mle 1924-1927
24 C.F. 31
The metal transit case is designed to hold three mortar rounds of the 27/31 model. The case measures 12 ¼ x 3 ½ x 3 ¾” and has a carry handle on the lid with two latches at the diagonal corners. Both sides of the case are stenciled:
MORTIER DE 81M/M
MLE 1927-1931
3 COUPS-COMPLETS
This is a very rare container to find.
This grouping is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its inert 81mm F.A. Mle 1924-27 projectile, original prewar ammunition crate explicitly marked for the same projectile type, and scarce three-round Mle 1927-31 mortar transit chest. Together, the pieces provide an unusually complete representation of the ammunition and transport equipment associated with the French Brandt 81mm mortar system immediately before and during the opening phase of WWII.
