Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous private-purchased French Model 1872 Infantry Captain Officer’s kepi, likely dating to the late 1870s or 1880s, hand-crafted by the prestigious maker Michel Spique & Cie. of Paris. This model of kepi had a small slot at the front of the crown for attachment of a Ball tuft. The three rows of braid around the body & the two vertical rows at the sides and back denote the rank of Captain. The kepi retains both its leather chinstrap and “false” chinstrap which sits against the body. The leather chinstrap has heavy wear with one piece already having come loose. Both chinstraps are held in place by the “Flaming Bomb” Infantry buttons. The top two of the three rows of braid have come undone from their stitching and the white stitch remnants can be seen. There are several places where the braid has come off of its stitching, and the previous owner attempted to reglue them. Someone has inserted a cylindrical cardboard frame to keep the shape of the kepi. The initials A.I. are monogrammed with small gilt letters under the maker’s mark. The maker’s marking reads:MICHEL SPIQUEL & CIE.E. DELORME IUA.164. RUE ST. HONOREPARISThe leather sweatband is very well-retained but may have been reglued to the visor. The gold-colored lining is intact thanks in part to the cardboard which gave the kepi shape. The kepi is roughly a size 7.This is a tremendously scarce French Model 1872 kepi, ready for further research and display.
