Original French Napoleonic Era Pair of Naval Axes Engraved Toulon - Re-Hafted- C. 1790

Item Description

Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Pair. This is a glorious pair of French Naval Axes which are engraved on plates at the Pommel TOULON, almost certainly for the French Port city of Toulon, which holds a long & tenured Naval history. The most prevalent of that history is the 1793 Siege of Toulon, during which Napoleon Bonaparte first won fame and promotion when his plan, involving the capture of fortifications above the harbor, was credited with forcing the city to capitulate and the Anglo-Spanish fleet to withdraw. The siege marked the first involvement of the British Royal Navy with the French Revolution.

The axes both measure roughly 41” in length, and have certainly been reshafted at one point. Both axes have split langets protruding from the back end of the heads, and are affixed to the shafts by four screws, two on each side. The pommels of each are affixed with Pommel boxes and a knob-screw, with the boxes both engraved TOULON.

This is a truly stunning set of Naval Axes which require a great deal more research to uncover their specific origins. They would look phenomenal crossed as the centerpiece of any Naval or French Napoleonic display. They come ready for further research and display!
