Original French Modèle 1890 Gendarmerie Carbine Cruciform Épée Bayonet with Steel Scabbard
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a French cruciform Épée bayonet, designed for the Mannlicher Berthier Modèle 1890 Gendarmerie Carbine. This rifle saw much service in French Indochina and other colonial areas. The bayonet has a 20 1/2 inch blade, and an overall length of about 25 inches. There is an old label on the solid nickel grip, indicating that is a "French 1890 Gendarmerie Bayonet".
The earlier M1886 bayonet had introduced the distinctive cruciform blade, which remained a feature of most French bayonets until 1956. This was intended to create such a terrible would that because of it's shape torn open very easily condemning the poor recipient to a very painful and long recovery.
There are some markings on the blade and scabbard, but we have not been able to identify them. There is also serial number F 3200 on both the scabbard hanger ring and hooked crossguard, so this is a matching set that has been together for quite some time. Condition is very good, with a lovely uncleaned patina, giving it a "out of the attic" look. The crossguard does have a lot of surface oxidation, but the blade itself is very nice, with just some light staining and dirt.
The included scabbard is still quite straight, with some small dents and scrapes. The finish is good, however there are many small areas of surface rust, as shown.
A very nice example of a French M1890 Gendarmerie bayonet, complete with scabbard. Ready to display!
