The French Bell Top Shako was a type of military headgear worn by soldiers during the early 19th century. It was an essential part of the uniform for soldiers, and its design was based on the traditional French military hat.

In 1840, after Napoleon I of France died in exile on the island of Saint Helena, his remains were brought back to France in a solemn and historic event known as the retour des cendres. The initiative was led by Prime Minister Adolphe Thiers and King Louis-Philippe, who believed that bringing back the remains of Napoleon would help to unite the country and reinforce its national identity.

The return of Napoleon's remains was a significant moment in French history, and it was marked by a grand procession through the streets of Paris. The procession ended at the Hôtel des Invalides, where Napoleon's body was laid to rest. Today, the Hôtel des Invalides remains an important site in Paris, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to pay their respects to Napoleon and learn about his extraordinary life and legacy.

The shako itself is in fantastic condition but does show signs of wear and age. There are the expected moth nips and material loss, but nothing too damaging that subtracts from the beauty of it.

A lovely example, reproduced 184 years ago for Official Military Ceremonies! Comes more than ready for further research and display.
