  • Original Item: Only One Available. This started life as a French Mle 1842 Line Musket or even possibly a Percussion Rifle. However when it was obsoleted it was sold to be converted into a Single Barrel Percussion Shotgun for sporting use.

The shotgun is actually quite nice, with a very attractive figured stock, probably French walnut. The right side of the butt stock has a hole where the stock markings would have been added to a wooden plug, now absent. The French markings were scrubbed from the gun prior to export, so serial number 2525 is all that remains on the left side of the barrel.

Converted shotguns such as these were very often intended be sold to the African Native market, including the ZULU'S for hunting purposes. Of course the Natives, notably the ZULU rebelled in 1879 and again in 1906, after which many of the "hunting" weapons were turned on the Europeans.

Things have not really changed, now it's AK47s to the Islamic extremists. No good deed goes unpunished. An interesting part of history, ready to display!
