Item Description

Original Item: Only OnE Available. This is a wonderful late 19th century French Fire Brigade helmet. It has leather backed scales and ornate ear roundels. It features a high comb and wonderfully ornate helmet plate with flaming bomb that reads: DEVOUEMENT SRS POMPIERS DE ST ULPHACE which translates to "Fire Stations in Saint Ulphance" and denotes which brigade in France. Saint-Ulphace is a commune in the Sarthe department in the region of Pays de la Loire in north-western France. The liner is missing and the claps between the chin scales is also absent. Helmet has minor denting throughout the shell. Overall a very appealing Fire Brigade helmet that dates from before the turn of the 20th century.

Pompier (firefighter) etymologically comes from the concept of pumping (water) & refers to the manual pumps that were originally used to fight fires.

Srs or Sapeur means "sapper" & refers to the 1st official firefighting unit created by Napoleon I which was part of the military engineering arm.
