Original French July Monarchy Era Model 1829 Artillery Officer’s Saber & Scabbard by Klingenthal - Dated 1830

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely well-used example of a French Model 1829 Artillery Officer’s saber in its original scabbard. This model was used by mounted gunners units in the Artillery Train of both the Imperial Guard and Line regiments in all the major campaigns of the Second Empire, including in the Crimean War, Italy 1859, China 1860, Mexico 1862/1867 and Franco-Prussian War 1870/1871.

The 32” nickel-plated blade is in fair condition, although we are not sure when the nickel-plating was done. The spine of the blade is marked Klingenthal, Janvier 1830 for manufacture in January 1830. There are additional stamps at the ricasso that we are unfamiliar with.

The brass hilt is in great condition, with the wire-wrapped leather grip in rough service-worn condition. The wire is loose in spots but still retained.

The nickel-plated scabbard is missing its throat, although the screw is retained for it. There is some heavy wear to the plating in spots, with some heavy oxidation towards the drag. Both suspension rings are retained.

This is a lovely Artillery officer’s sword from the period of the July Monarchy, the first we have offered. Comes ready for further research and display.
