Original French Indochina War M1951 Helmet with Original Liner, Burlap Cover and Camouflage Net

This is a very nice original French Modèle 1951, or M1951, steel helmet dating to the First Indochina War period and complete with its original liner, burlap cover and camouflage net. The M1951 became the standard French military helmet during the post WWII period and is strongly associated with French forces serving in Indochina and later Algeria.
The helmet itself was developed as France standardized and modernized its equipment following WWII. French forces had emerged from the war using a mixture of older Adrian helmets, the Modèle 1945 and large quantities of American supplied M1 helmets. The new M1951 adopted the same general two piece concept as the American M1, with a separate steel shell and removable liner.
Although clearly influenced by the U.S. M1, the French M1951 has its own distinctive profile. The M1 generally has a more pronounced visor and a greater downward sweep along the sides, while the French shell has a somewhat different shape. The suspension systems also differ, including the absence of the M1 style nape strap on the French liner.
This example retains a heavily service used burlap camouflage cover over the steel shell, with a net fitted over the exterior. The burlap shows substantial age and field wear and is now breaking apart in several areas. The net is also rather loosely attached and should be handled carefully to avoid further disturbance.
The combination gives the helmet a particularly convincing field used appearance characteristic of French equipment from the fighting in Indochina, where locally adapted camouflage and helmet covers were widely encountered.
The original liner remains present and shows considerable use. There is cracking around portions of the liner edge, along with the expected wear from age and service. The internal suspension remains present, as does the sweatband, both showing oxidation, staining and general use.
The First Indochina War, fought from 1946 until 1954, placed French forces in extremely demanding tropical conditions against the Việt Minh. French troops included metropolitan units, colonial formations, Foreign Legion personnel and airborne forces, and the conflict became one of the defining campaigns of the postwar French Army.
Introduced during the latter part of that conflict, the M1951 represented the new generation of French military equipment that would continue in widespread service during the Algerian War and for years afterward.
Overall, this is a very appealing service used French M1951 helmet with the desirable combination of liner, heavily worn burlap cover and camouflage net. The deterioration to the cover, loose net and worn liner are all plainly evident, but together they give the helmet the kind of honest field appearance that makes these Indochina era examples particularly interesting.
