Original Item: Only One Available.This is a particularly interesting named French First Indochina War Croix de Guerre des Théâtres d’Opérations Extérieurs, or Croix de Guerre T.O.E., accompanied by its original 1954 citation document issued through the Forces Terrestres du Sud-Vietnam to Vietnamese serviceman NGONH QUACH, a 1st Class soldier serving with the 5e Régiment de Cuirassiers.

The surviving paperwork provides a remarkable account of the action for which the recipient was cited. General Order No. 256, dated October 16, 1954, records NGONH QUACH as:

NGONH QUACH - 1° Classe - T.C. - Mle 848 - 5° Régiment de Cuirassiers

The abbreviation Mle refers to his matricule, or service number, which is recorded as 848. The document was issued under General RENUCCI, commanding the Forces Terrestres du Sud-Vietnam, and cites NGONH QUACH à l'ordre du régiment, meaning at regimental level. The accompanying citation gives a detailed account of his conduct as a machine-gun gunner:

"Machine-gun gunner who, while participating in road-opening operations and escort missions carried out by his unit on the R.I.P. 1, consistently displayed fine qualities of initiative and courage.

He particularly distinguished himself on 27 July 1954 during the attack on the post of CHANH LUU (Song Be Sub-Sector, South Vietnam), where, although his vehicle was blown up by a mine and despite heavy fire from the rebels, he contributed effectively, through his accurate fire, to putting the enemy to flight."

The citation concludes with the especially important statement:

CETTE CITATION COMPORTE L’ATTRIBUTION DE LA CROIX DE GUERRE DES THÉÂTRES D’OPÉRATIONS EXTÉRIEURS AVEC ÉTOILE DE BRONZE.

This translates as: “This citation carries with it the award of the Croix de Guerre for External Theaters of Operations with Bronze Star.”

The bronze star was significant, as it represented a citation made at the regimental or brigade level. While the citation confirms that NGONH QUACH's award was authorized with this device, the bronze star itself is no longer present on the medal's ribbon.

The Croix de Guerre des Théâtres d’Opérations Extérieurs was established by France in 1921 for military citations earned during operations outside metropolitan France after the First World War. The same decoration was extensively awarded for distinguished conduct during the First Indochina War. The 5th Cuirassiers had a substantial combat history in Indochina, having deployed there following the Second World War and earning its own distinctions during the campaign.

This example is the regulation bronze cross pattée with crossed swords between its arms. The obverse central medallion depicts the personification of the French Republic surrounded by:

The cross hangs from the characteristic T.O.E. ribbon, consisting of a broad pale blue central stripe bordered by red stripes. The bronze surfaces retain a pleasing, naturally aged patina, with lighter coloration visible on some of the raised details. The ribbon remains securely attached and displays honest age, including some fading, minor staining, small pulls and holes, and stitching and reinforcement visible on the reverse.

Of particular historical interest is the date of the cited action. NGONH QUACH distinguished himself at CHANH LUU on July 27, 1954, during the final days of active fighting in southern Vietnam. Although the Geneva agreements had been concluded only days earlier, the cease-fire in southern Vietnam did not take effect until August 11, making this a citation for an action occurring at the very end of the First Indochina War.

The accompanying citation document is itself very attractive, headed FORCES TERRESTRES DU SUD-VIETNAM and decorated with military illustrations including an armed soldier, river craft, and observation tower. It bears official stamps, the typed notation “Signé : RENUCCI,” and the signature associated with Lt. Colonel LAURENT, identified as Sous-Chef d'État-Major, or Deputy Chief of Staff. It is dated at Saigon, November 6, 1954.

The certificate shows age, including toning, staining, fold lines and corner losses. It requires careful handling. Importantly, the principal typed citation remains quite clear and legible. This is an excellent documented pairing from the closing days of the First Indochina War.
