Original French Early 20th Century République Française “RF” Civic Flag Display with Three Tricolor Flags & Poles

Original Item: One-of-a-Kind Set. This is a fascinating original French République Française civic flag display, consisting of a large painted RF flag-holder panel together with three period flags mounted on wooden poles. The arrangement was almost certainly intended as a patriotic or institutional display, with the center flag held vertically and the two outside flags projecting outward at opposing angles.
The RF flag carrier measures 14 ¼ x 19 ½ x 6” including the metal frame on the back. The first flag has no faux topper and is the classic French tri-color flag, measuring 22 x 42” with a 43 ½” pole. The flag is tattered with tearing and loss at the end, with blue paint on the pole.
The second flag has a cute faux pole topper with an RF in the center, and is 22 ¼ x 29” with a 45 ½” pole. The flag is two pieces stitched together but is only white. It was likely colored long ago but has faded heavily since then.
The final flag has a cute faux pole topper with a star in the center, and is 18 ¼ x 23” with a 42” pole, though the pole is heavily warped now from age or damage. This is again the tri-color French flag with heavy fading.
When set up together, the set displays very nicely, and the flags do look like they have been with the set for a long while.
The back of the RF flag carrier itself shows that it was made from an existing sign that may have been in Germany based on some of the words. Also interesting is that the sign has no red field in the tricolor background, only white and blue. There is heavy oxidation to the front of the sign so it could have worn away.
The combination of the large RF republican emblem, three-position metal flag frame, three old flags and poles, two decorative sheet-metal finials, extensive weathering, and unusual reused signboard construction makes this a particularly evocative piece of French civic and patriotic material. Rather than a conventional military flag set, it is best understood as an early French republican porte-drapeaux intended to display the national colors prominently on a public, institutional, or commemorative building.
