Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original German-made French-pattern infantry briquet saber manufactured by the well-known Solingen firm Alexander Coppel. Closely following the general form of the French An XI infantry briquet, it retains its curved single-edged blade, nickel-finished brass hilt, and original leather scabbard with metal suspension fittings.
The sword features a 25 5/8” blade with an overall length of 30 1/2”. The ricasso is marked on one side with the "Scales" trademark logo of Alexander Coppel, which was officially registered in 1903. Per J Anthony Carter's Work GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, Alexander Coppel & Co. KG, Stahlwarenfabrik, (Steel Ware Factory), this company was a major manufacturer of edged weapons and tools from the end of the 19th century up until the WWII period.
Solingen had been one of Europe’s principal centers for sword and blade manufacture for centuries, and its firms supplied weapons to military and commercial customers throughout Europe and overseas.
There is some light oxidation staining to the blade but there are no edge nicks. The felt blade buffer is intact, though it is weak. The original scabbard is intact, measuring 26 ⅞”. The single suspension ring is intact, but the leather has some bending in spots. The scabbard has been nickeled as well but there is bare brass where it has worn away.
The combination of the Alexander Coppel balanced-scales trademark, Solingen manufacture, French briquet-derived form, nickel-plated brass hilt and scabbard fittings, curved 25⅝-inch blade, and surviving original leather scabbard makes this an interesting example of the continued international influence of French military sword design during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its exact purchaser and service remain unidentified, but its construction and maker mark firmly place it within the broad export and military edged-weapon tradition for which Solingen was internationally known.
